Transit Department Announces Leadership Transition

The Mayor’s Office is announcing an important leadership transition within the City of Wilmington Transit Department. Effective January 5, 2026, Jonathan McKay will be transitioning from his role as Transit Director. Jonathan has led the department with dedication, vision, and a steady commitment to our community, and we are incredibly grateful for his work and the impact he has made.

Beginning January 5, 2026, Jonathan will assume the role of Public Information Officer in the Mayor’s Office. In this new role, Jonathan will continue to serve our city, ensuring effective communication and fostering public engagement.

We are also excited to welcome Mel McKenzie as our new Transit Director, effective January 5, 2026. Mr. McKenzie brings extensive experience and a passion for innovation. He previously served as the Safety and Service Director for the City of Hillsboro and holds an associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology from Florence-Darlington Technical College, earned in 1998. In addition to his leadership roles in Hillsboro, Mr. McKenzie has a background as a Senior Engineering Technician and experience in public works and city administration. He played an important role in city operations and infrastructure.

Please join us in congratulating Jonathan on his new role and welcoming Mel to the Transit Department. We look forward to a smooth transition and an exciting future for our our community.
