The mission of the City of Wilmington Wastewater Treatment Plant is to protect public health and the environment.
About Wastewater and Treatment
The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) treats wastewater so it can be returned safely to the environment. Wastewater treatment is the “last line of defense” against water pollution. Through the treatment process, wastewater is disinfected, eliminating many harmful organisms that can create disease causing bacteria and viruses. The treatment process protects water quality by keeping lakes, streams and rivers clean.
The excess bacteria and solids generated in the treatment process produce a stable, beneficial by-product known as biosolids. Biosolids have fertilizer value and are applied to agricultural fields.
