Code Enforcement Process Guide

The code enforcement process is generally initiated by a concerned resident reporting a possible violation.

Typical chain of events

  1. Concern or violation reported.
  2. Inspection is carried out by the Code Enforcement Official.
  3. Determination if violation exists and photos are obtained.
  4. If the violation is founded, a case is opened, and violations are added.
  5. Property owner and/or tenant are notified via mail or personal service of violation.
  6. Follow up inspection date is determined by Code Enforcement Official and communicated to owner or tenant.

Approximately 90 percent of code enforcement cases are resolved by the property owner/responsible party following formal notification of the violations.  When voluntary compliance is not obtained however, the city will pursue criminal charges until the violations have been resolved.
